flushing the rearend

Hey fellows I bought a 450 that has sat outside for a few years. Drained 3 gallons of water out (after it thawed) then only drained 3 gallons of nasty lookin oil and sludge out. My question is I have seen a post about flushing with diesel but cannot find it in the archives. I don't really want to flush with hyd fluid and waste it but I dont know what was put in with the disel for flushing. My I & T manual says it needs approx. 15 gallons and I hate to waste that much diesel too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and keep em rollin!

Kerosene. Put in 5 -10 gallons, and then run her around a bit, working through all the gears. Run the PTO, or anything else that runs in or through the tranny.

Drain well.

Since I believe that has a TA on it, then HiTran is probably best. But I am the first to admit, I know little to nothing outside of the letter and F series. I hope if kerosene is not good for cleaning the tranny with a TA on the newer tractos, someone will correct me.

Manual recommends sae 10 with TA additive. Dealer says its HyTran. Stuff coming out looks bad so I will flush I just thought they said to put something in the diesel.

SAE 10 with TA addative is hytran...well at least it was trying to be hytran back in the day.

I would use diesel rather than kero. It is way cheaper and pretty much the same.

If you want to save money and get it clean, take the trans top off. Remove the drain plug. Then pressure wash the whole inside. Then get it dried out. Fill her up with HyTran. This will take much more effort, but will save you the $65 of diesel fuel you will waste and this will get it much cleaner.

sflem849, where are you buying your diesel? Around here Kero is 3.69 and diesel is 4.19 Now, if you are getting offroad diesel, I would probably agree with you.

Also, there is a different between kero and diesel. Kero is a better solvent, but both diesel and kero are hygroscopic (they absorb water), and in this case would help to dry things out inside.

I haven't bought it since last summer, but I get it at the TA in Janesville. I was buying it for my pressure washer. I actually switched over to diesel because it wasn't worth the extra money and trip to "the big city" to get kero. The pressure washer guy says it is worth the extra work because kero is cleaner and better for the pressure washer. Last summer it was a solid $0.30 more. That is compared to on road. I would have to go to the other side of Janesville to buy off road and that is really a PITA.

Agree with Tom, i did the same thing in my 450. I had about 6 or so gallons of old diesel i threw in there. Ran it for about 45 mins drained it; and let it drain on a slope for about a day plus to make sure i got all possible fluid out. Make sure to remove all 3 plugs, rear, middle and front. Replace with Hy-tran equivelant hydraulic/gear oil. I used 303 costal in mine. Working great for me.
