New to me Farmall NEED INFO - SAVED FROM SCRAP YARD!!

Hey guys, and Happy Mother's Day to everyone out there (gotta keep em happy so they'll allow us to bring in more tractors, haha).

I just bought an IH 240 Utility this morning that has been sitting in a fence row for a few years. We put some fresh gas in it and jumped it off, and it fired right up!! You couldn't ask for a better running tractor. You can actually count the RPM's when at idle because it will idle so low and smooth!!!

ANYWAYS.....we have only owned Farmall Cubs, Super A's through 140's before and have never had anything like this. At first glance the engine in the 240-U resembles the ones in the 100-140 tractors. The hydraulics look a little different though. This one is gonna need a throw-out bearing because you can hear and feel the slop when depressing and letting out on the clutch. Also, its prolly gonna need the hydraulics cleaned out good and checked for leaks; as it raises and lowers by body weight (200#), but "burps" a little like it could be low on fluid. Its gonna need a new set of gauges, an original seat, new steering wheel and possibly 2 original lights as you all can see from the pictures.

Is there anything different about this tractor from the ones we have that I should know about or be aware of?? I noticed the 3 point hitch on it is a little different than the common one found on other tractors. Its also apparently got weights on the front and some sort of weights on the rear. We are gonna be getting a shop manual on it, but I really would rather ask you guys....PLUS yall can tell me stuff about it that it might not include...especially since we don't even need to mess with the motor. I'd also like to know where I can get some good used parts for it (the ones I mentioned before) at a good price. I might be up for some trades as well since I have around 30 other Farmall tractors and TONS of parts.

It's a C123 engine (like the IH 140) and get's the added horsepower from higher rpm's. I think there are differences in the valves/carb/manifold that increase the rpm's.

Ok. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I thought it looked like the same engine, but wasn't sure cause the hydraulic block is different.

I am open to ALL and ANY information and suggestions you all have on this tractor. I look forward to hearing from you all soon. I am about to go outside and look for the serial number plate and take a closer look at everything else to see if it might have power steering, etc. Be back soon!

Ok, upon a quick inspection the serial number plate is missing. All of the rivets are in place, but the plate is gone. I will have to get the engine serial number to narrow it down, but won't be able to do that until its time to tear down for restore. I also looked around to see if it had the power steering option. I didn't see any evidence of it.

The hitch, wheel weights, and hydraulic system is what I am wondering about. Yall let me know what you guys think!!!

I have a 240U with the same 3 point which is modified from the Fast-Hitch. It was a factory option and takes a special short top link which might be hard to find. One drawback on my 3 point is it is not very sensative to adjustments... move the control a little and it won't follow, move it a little more and it may or may not move the arms. When it does move, it will move more than I want.
I notice yours has an alternator, which probably means it's converted to 12v. I just had an issue with mine and had the starter re-built and the field windings changed to 12v. The 6v. starter spun too fast before engaging the ring gear and had the drive and ring gear chewed up. Now it starts so fast it surprises me.
I have an IH-Wagner loader and a Char-Lynn PS. It has a separate crank driven pump for the loader and the PS operates off the tractor hydraulic pump with a priority flow valve feeding the steering. due to the first 2 or 3 GPM going to the steering, when idled down, there isn't enough flow to operate the 3 point... need to be at about 1/3 throttle or more.
The 240 is the next generation of the C-SC-200-230 and the Utility was added in the 240 line-up.
In some ways, a nice little tractor with about 40HP at the motor and 28 DBHP, but with the introduction in 1958, you would think they should have an independant PTO. Most other brands did by then.
I had a 1955 Super 55 Oliver and it was twice the tractor, but thought I could get along without a tractor. After a few years when I went looking for one with a loader, I found this one and being "raised" on Cs and Super Cs, I thought I should have it. Not sorry I bought it, but given a chance for that Oliver with PS and a loader, it would be gone.

(quoted from post at 01:00:06 05/09/11) Anything else like that in the fencerow?

He has a 90 percent complete Massey Ferguson Square Hay Baler for sale also. To us, we weren't intrested at his $300 asking price because we know NOTHING about hay balers and how to troubleshoot/fix them. It needed a few odds and ends but looked to be in nice condition with good paint. He also had a new PTO clutch for it. He said he thinks he will get around $300 scrap for it, so that is what he wants to do. We were gonna hook it to the truck hitch and drive it home if he woulda took $100 for it, but to us it just isn't worth anymore trying to figure out what we would have had! We thought the asking price of $600 was good for the 240-U tractor....especially since it runs EXCELLENT!!

About the only other thing I can add is that parts are very difficult to locate as both the Farmall 240 row crop tractor and the International 240 Utility were made in fairly low production numbers for Farmall models. There are 3 times as many Utilities as Farmall ones so you might be somewhat better off on availability of parts but it certainly won't be like finding Super C, H and M parts. Be prepared for searching them out as few parts unique to these 240's are being reproduced and your only option in most cases is finding original parts from a parts tractor. Good luck and enjoy your new tractor, Hal.

What is the part number for that front bumper assembly? :D

I want to get one like that for mine! 8)

I am not sure what we are going to do with this one yet since we are going to paint the tractor and re-do it. We might use it since its nice, but we might not to keep it original. Please check back with me within 2 or 3 months to see what we decided on. I am not sure if this one is original or not because the others that I've seen were not this heavy duty.

You will need a IH-201 I&T manual. I would recommend the IH preventive maintenance manual also. I included a pic of the dash from the original sales brochure to give you an idea of whats missing. Looks like from your picture the tach, ammeter, and fuse holder are missing. Not sure about the small hole in the upper left. Should be a dash light under the "hood" in the middle. I changed mine over to twelve volt. The light socket I used was from an instrument cluster on a 1960s era ford. Fit and was 12 volt. The hole in the middle above the wheel should have a light switch. You can get them from oemtractorpartsdotcom. You would want part # OEM599, I think, but check with them before ordering. Nice find though. Good luck

Thank you all for the help and the kind words. I actually think I have seen a 240 utility tractor not far from our place just sitting in their yard. Its been there for as long as I can remember. I'm sure something is wrong with it, or its just for parts. I'm not sure though. It would probably be worth looking into and seeing if they would be intrested in selling it. If any of you have anything else to add, just let me know! THANKS AGAIN!!
