Need your opinion

I am wanting to buy a Farmall, we had a H,MTA and 300 int when I was young on the farm (1950s) I mow about 4 acres and want to garden about up to 1 acre and need an opnion on which to buy. I have looked at the Cub, A, Super A and really do not know which would be the best for the purpose except I want an old Farmall or IH to re-live my years on the farm..

Thanks, john

Well lets look at them this way a Cub is around 12HP and has hyds. The A is around 18HP and has NO hyds. The Super A is around 23HP and has hyds. So in the long run the Super A for what you want to do will do the job better fast and probably also save fuel over time

Basically, an Super A is 2-3 times the tractor a Cub is. A Super A has the power to do work quickly, vs. a Cub, which may or may not get the job done, and, if it does, it will take forever. A regular A is basically a Cub with power. It doesn't have a fast hitch or hydraulics. Personally, I would look out for an early 140. They have the same engine as a Super A and Super C, but will out pull an H in 1st gear (according to Nebraska). Anything with to 113 or 123 engine will do what you want. The problem with a 60 engine (which is in the Cub), is that it must always be operating at close to peak efficiency. If the Cub loses much power at all, it is automatically underpowered for any job.

I hope you find a tractor you enjoy, SF

I think I would be looking for another 300. Superior hydraulic system and the 2 point fast hitch, which can easily be converted to a 3 point hitch, would make a very handy machine for both mowing and working up the garden patch.

I think I'd be looking for a Super C or 200 or maybe even a 230 or 240. If you are doing tillage work and maybe some mowing, they are the handiest small tractors on the planet. With a Fast-Hitch, you can do almost anything, plowing, discing, planting, cultivating, blading, mowing, and even have enough power to handle a small square baler if you are not in a hurry. there are more of the SC and 200 models, so should be easier to find.

Thanks Guys,

You have given me a lot to think about but I know where to start looking. Just couldn't buy a lawn tractor etc at Lowes when these great old tractors are still around. Sure appreciate your replys.

I have: 48C,53SC with fast hitch,200 with fast hitch,53SH,56-300 with fast hitch. The Super C with fast hitch is the handiest. I maintain 6 acres of which 1/2 acre is garden. In spite of some opinions my SC will handle a 6' shredder with ease.SH,300 are great tractors but clumsy compared to the SC,200. I have used cubs,A's,SA's,B's, Fords; 9N,8N,600's and just did't like them as well as the Farmall row crops.

Really don't undestand that. Having used an SC, M JD, AC CA and a Ford 8N I'd rather walk behind a mule than use anything except the 8N. This year I'm plowing about 10 acres with it, use it on the bush hog, finish mow about 4 1/2 acres a week, cultivate, sub soil, grade the drive, plant with a 2 row planter and dig post holes with it. Don't get wrong the SC is a good tractor but the hitch system on the N is better without mods and being a bit shorter works way better when working in the woods and around low branches. Just wish the N was in the 30HP range.

I don't blame a guy for wanting a tractor like he grew up on.....but I didn't grow up on one. Moved to farm country at 16. I happen to like IH tractors 560 and newer. Not really impressed with the older ones except for looks. But thats my opinion.....For what this guy is wanting the SC is what he should be looking for.

Come on guys, his garden is only an acre and the mowing is only 4. It isn't going to call for a 1568 or 4300.

Either a Cub or a Super A will do fine. The Super A will do more and do it faster. I'd suggest whichever one you find that comes with most of the implements you want to have with it.

One thing to be aware of, changing out between the mower and other mounted equipment takes enough effort to take the fun out of it after a while. Don't plan on weekly mowings and using the tractor to cultivate the garden between mowings. If you are going to prep the garden with the tractor then switch it over to mowing duty, you will get along fine.

LOL Jim, that gives him an excuse to get more than one.....1 for the lawn, one for the garden and maybe one for "other" chores!!!!!! I still trying to convince my wife that I need a couple of more tractors....a 560D and maybe a 706D or 806D....keep telling here with my knees it would be better on me if I wasn't having to climb on and off to hook stuff up! Be nice to have another utility in the 30 hp range too. That way I could just leave the finish mower on the N for the summer!

A man can never have too many tractors!

Oldtanker,

That is the best advice anyone can give, Get 2 or 3 or maybe one of each, one for every chore, keep them rigged and ready to work without having to stress them knees.I had a 8n to restore a few years ago and it is a great tractor but have the yearn for a Farmall.

PS. Even my wife agrees, want her to talk to your wife?

LOL John, don't think that will work, got a 1206, M, Ford 8N and a JCB tractor loader backhoe now.....she thinks thats more than enough! Plus got a round baler and haybine in the last 2 months......plus a 5' brush hog this month......she's about fed up with me buying equipment. And I'm going to look at a grain drill later! Now here's the funny part......she will not let me get rid of the self propelled swather and is ok with me looking for a combine.

The next question that comes up is one of attachments. You've got a tractor to mow and garden with, but now you need a mower and a plow!

As far as attachments go, you're going to find the most stuff for the Cub. Super A is a distant second. Attachments for an A are particularly tough to find.

Unless the tractor comes with the attachments you need, you may need to travel great distances and spend vast quantities of time and money procuring them. Some attachments you may never find...

Once you move up into the larger tractors you get into the capacity to pull the larger, standardized trailing implements. You open yourself up to more possibilities for getting the tools you need to do the job.
