706G won't start, electrical issue

I recently bought this tractor. It has always started right up. Last night, nothing when I hit the starter. Smoke started coming from under the cowl above the key. Is this a bad switch or some other short? I tried turning the switch on and off multiple times and it did start once in about 15 or 20 tries. How do I get access to the back of the dash? Looks like from above by removing the hood piece behind dash. Thanks for any help.
 
Smoke is not a good thing and removing the cowl is the fastest way . Remove the T/A handle and the bolts your grab handle and your in . Now as to what happened ??????? something must have shorted out .Just where in the buckeye are you???
 
I'm in Atwater, Portage County. I got a fuel blockage issue in the carb (won't run without choke) that I was going to try to work on and now this came up.
 
It's time to invest in a new RH dash harness for sure. Maybe more than that. Investigate farther to find any broken wire(s) and related parts. My guess is the wiring is original or "race modified" at one time and its bad.

Ken i can build that harness with no problem and even use factory ends and plugs. Done way more then i care to think about. Got all the connections in the truck and the correct Delco 56 wire ends to go with it. even the correct wire sizes and colors.He is about 20-25 miles N. W. of me and i can run up and get him straighten out .
 
Oh no doubt as with working on tractors truck combines and even cars nothing surprises me anymore. Back in 69 when working at a Ford Dealership this nice cute young fox brings her 68 mustang in and tells the service manage that her car stinks like a garbage dump . Being that it was a Mustang and she was one of the Drag club members i got stuck looking for this god awful smell and she was wright it smelled like a garbage dump We tore out all the interior and back in the right rear quarter panel someone at the assembly plant stuffed the lunch way back in brown paper bag and all. have dug a cat out of more then one fan had rats run over my arm while working on a combine even got run off a 706 with cab because of a copperhead setting on the seat sunning himself.see how that would grab ya open the door and step up and here is a snake on the seat , sure did not take long for me to get off that one and close the door.
 
I'll be happy to take you up on that if you don't mind. I've been lurking on this board along time so I know your expertise on the 706 gassers and will take all the first hand help and knowledge I can get. It seems the more I try to fix on this thing, the more problems I cause.
