Continental engine hard starting

My new holland Skidsteer has a 2 cyl gas continental engine. I know this is not a ih but the problem I am having is that last week it became very hard to get it running. I use to pull the choke move the trottle up hit the key and it would start. Now I have to Trottle all the way down and no choke to get it running. I have to then feather it up to full Throttle. I cleaned the carb and blew it out with air. THe only thing I could find is the plug that is in the bottom of the air intake on the carb is missing. There is just a open hole. Cound this cause the problem or is something else doing it. The plugs are not wet when I am turning it over and cant get it to start so it must be a fuel issue. the pump is working and the valves are going up and down. I am stumped. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and see if there's a full stream of gas from the fuel pump. It may be defective or you have blockage in the fuel tank. Use a clean container to catch any gas. If the tank is gravity fed to your pump you probably need to disconnect that fuel line to see if there's full flow to your pump. Catch all that gas so you don't have a fire. Hal

Did you replace the float valve? Did you check the float for leaks? Is the float set at the correct height?

Don't rule out an ignition problem either. You may have a weak coil, or it might be over due for a good, general tune-up.

The float is ok. i disconnected the pump line and that is fine also. Lots of gas coming out of it. I used the air compressor to blow all the lines out. the fuel for the idle of the engine should come from the jet in the bottom of the carb that leeds to the small pipe that is in the air intake before the venturi.

I also know it is not electrical. the plugs are dry after trying to start it several times. it is a fuel issue. if I pull the air hose off and hand choke it, it starts much better. I will check the float again but that shouldn't really affect starting. It will not even attempt to fire unless the throttle is all the way down. I am still wondering if the plug missing on the bottom of the carb is causing an irregular air flow and therefor not picking up fuel?

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor when cranking and see if you have good suction on your hand. Poor suction means you have weak manifold vacuum. Hal

I have taken apart the carb again the float was sticking. I took a match to the end and it doesn't seem to stick anymore. Little trick I learned working on snowmobiles. I Still cant start it unless its at low idle and no choke. It like the machine just flipped a switch. Last week it was running and starting fine now its a bear to get running. I have checked for spark and that seems strong. it still seems like a fuel issue. If you open the trottle it wont even try to fire unless you take all the air away. This is sure a puzzler. if you have any more ideas let me know.
