we have decided to go a head and put the money into the tractor to get it running good. question is where to start and what do yah think it might cost? thanks

Your choice as to where to start.

I've got $14K in my 686 without an engine overhaul. The 686 is nothing more than a newer version of the 656.

If the vet says rebuild it, do so. If he says put a rebuilt distributor and run it with the new gasket. do so. Not only does he have first hand visual and tactical experience with this tractor, he has a lifetime of experiences with red tractors. My guess is to put the distributor on it with a new cleaned up head gasket, and run it. But the Vet has laid hands on it. Go with that advice. Jim

I did not see the inside of the engine so to speak just what i could see with my mini mag lite thru the spark plug holes . 3-4 were pock marked from the bee bee's and from what i could see in the pictures Andy sent me thru the e/mail . So i am between a rock and a hard spot here . To do it wright he is looking at some pretty good bucks . Does it need a major ??????? i never looked at the hours on it but it does have ware on it as the amount of BRIDGING on the rockers , not as bad as some i have seen but it is there .we got to remember that Andy is young and does not have a lot of experience in engine building and not a lot to work with. It is a hike out there for me to run out there and since i do not have a fuel sipper i do not want to break the kid with just payen for gas to run out there three or four times . I will go back out and help him if he needs it when i can . With the sun tiring to shine i will have to get busy with stuff i need to get done. like rebuilding two disc a chisel fix the brakes on my 806 that i have been letting go for way tolong and try and get in the fields and finish up that nightmare cubcadet and get it out to Mo. And fix a Oil All OVER fix fence and some other things for my friend out there and i am setting two weeks aside for that so i will be in Mo. here soon also.

In that circumstance, the answer is going to be based on how much oil it used when it last ran well. If basically none, I would make it right on the ignition, gasket, and tune, then run it. If it has hours since new in the range of 5000, and or used some oil I would do the rebuild. Jim

well it currently has about 8540 hours on it. before when it ran i did use some oil, but i would say it was mostly leaking but some was burning. i am not sure when it had been torn apart last although would say it has probably been agood 10 years or so not sure on the hours, but 3-5 years ago we used that tractor for everthing except field work, every week it ground feed, pitched manure, made hay, you name it it did it so it has been run alot.
