FARMALL H MPG

My Farmall H will be in the Memorial Day Parade in Gilroy, CA. The total distance is 16 miles, 15 miles will be in 5th gear, all flat roads. What should I expect for MPG, the engine is good shape with a new valve job. I plan to have extra gas in the tank, but I would still like to know what the trip should take.

Thanks,
Wayne

Based on experience with my Super H expect to use no more than a gallon and a half for 16 miles. (If set out with 5 gallons in the tank you'll be fine!)

Nice looking H BTW!!

Well, I can't imagine you using more than about 3 gallons of gas total. That tractor will burn, what, about 3 gallons an hour working the pants off it, you're not really gonna work it, unless you've got 15 miles of steep hill 5th gear driving. You're gonna burn a gallon or two an hour no matter what (At least my M did). Better put at least a 5 gallon can into it. Personally I'd put more into it. I try to keep stuff full for condensation reasons.

Nice looking tractor by the way. -Andy

Thanks for the MPG info.

I had an interesting problem, the engine was sputtering which turned out to be sparks jumping form the center of the cap to the plug wires on the outside. I just need to push the wire boots all the way down to solve the problem. I have a 12 volt coil designed to be used without an external resistor.

(quoted from post at 19:18:44 05/04/11) Nice H!!! I like the personal touches you added solid state VR, digital gauge, tach???)

A friend was having a low voltage problem his Bosch Solid State. I took it to the generator shop, but with no 12 Volt generator to test it, I used my Farmall H 6 Volt generator for the test. My friend’s regulator was bad, but the new one worked great on the test stand and put out 16 Amps at 14.3 Volts. When I was wiring my H, I remembered the Bosch regulator test and liked the idea of simply changing the battery, spark coil and regulator to have a 12 Volt system.

The gauge was a tach, but I changed to a Voltmeter.
The Bosch Solid State regulators sell for $29 and should last a long time with no contacts to ware out.

Fill it up!Nothing more embarrasing than to run out of gas.You will probally use less than 5 gal for the trip.

An H is really underpowered for 5th gear. If you push the engine it will suck gas like there's no tomorrow. Ease back a little and get about 2 gallons per hour on flat ground.

Yep, I've been around Gilroy and it is flat there unless you go up 152 somewhere, like to up Casa de Fruita or over to Watsonville. A good H should do your trip on 5 gallons of gas easy. It'll use a gallon and a half an hour cruising around in 5th if you're not pulling anything and it'll go 15-16 MPH easy with normal size tires on it...I've got one, I know. Nice looking H you've got there. I usta live in the Santa Clara Valley...back when it was a beautiful place, not over-populated like it is now.
