Setting Points 1958 IHC 560

Hey Guys,
I am working on a 1958 IHC 560. It pops and misses under a load either pulling or going up a slight incline. I was wondering how to set the points. The tractor has never had any problems untill now. I have replaced the spark plugs, wires, and cap and rotor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should also replace the points and condenser.

Now, are you asking HOW to set the points, as in the process, or are you asking for the gap measurement?

I guess what I am asking is, do I just set the points to .020 and thats it. I don't have to bring the #1 Piston to TDC or anything else. I can't find a Pertronix Distributor for a 1958 560. If someone could supply a website or part number that would be great.

You want the points to be open when you set them, TDC would be (around) where they're closed.

Just rotate the engine until the points a furthest apart then set them to spec. It's not hard at all.

I noticed you said you were going to change the condenser but you didn't mention the points...change those too.

Pull the dizzy cap off. Look at the shaft the the points rubs against. It will have high points or lobes. Turn the engine by hand until the rub block on the points is at the highest point on one of the lobes. Then adjust the point gap. You don't have to worry about TDC that way and it will be right as long as you do the adjustment right. When finished remember to rotate the engine until the points are closed then take a clean piece of paper (printer paper works well, so will a dollar bill) push the points open with a finger of screw driver, stick in the paper, let the points close on it and pull the paper out. That will get any dirt or oil that may be on there out.
