Just bought a 1952 H farmall tractor. I am going to use it only in the summer for mowing(SD). What type of oil should I use in the engine and also what is the capacity of engine oil. THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE

i use shell rotella 15-40 diesel service in all my old farmall tractors. works fine. h holds about 6 quarts of oil.

15-40 diesel spec. oil is just fine for that gas tractor. They start well with the multi wt, and like the thicker run temp viscosity. Most of us on the forum use either 10-40, 10-30, or 15-40.
All of todays oils are so much better than any oil of the past, that if it is a brand name, it will be fine. I always took 8 quarts out to do the change, and had some left over to add later. (with filter) Dig out the old filter square section seal in the groove under the filter canister. It takes a dental pic or sharp ice pic to get at the hardened rubber. When getting a filter, make sure to get that seal (square section Oring) Jim

If you are NOT going to use it in the winter I'd go with a ny 10-30. The H engine won't hardly get to operating temp mowing.
Where in SD are you. I'm a tad west of Mitchell.

The H holds 6 qts, the M, 8. It takes only around 5 qts to get the oil to run out the top petcock. If you change the filter, put 5 in and run it for a short period of time. Let it drain down, then add until it runs out the top petcock. I think the 6 qt capacity is for a dry engine, although it probably doesn't hurt anything to just put 6 in.

IH spent a lot of money and years telling people to use low ash oil in gas engines and still advertises it to this day on their gas engine oils.

Unless you are using oil for Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel engine (CJ-4) don't put it in your gas engine.

Most now do! I just researched it and there is reason to believe it is now reasonable to use 15-30 high quality oil in gas engines. Jim

Personally I would use either straight 30 weight or possibly 15-30. I prefer 30, but that's just me. As to detergent or non, it depends on the condition of the engine. If it has been overhauled, I would use high-detergent, but if the engine is in fairly rough condition, you may be better off going non-detergent, then low on the next change, and high detergent after that.
Have fun with your tractor! SF

I am adding a thermostat to mine. It runs a little cold blooded without it. I am hoping to pick up some fuel economy that way.
