Update on Andy Stockmaker's 656 problems

I made the drive out to Andy's place today since there was not much else to do and we found some of his problems and one big self inflicted problem from welding the exhaust manifold , some weld be be's got into 3-4 and left there mark in the top of the pistons and head . Andy's power problems were inpart due to advance springs in the dist. have just seen a little to much field testing valves set loose a heat riser not working and needs freed up a bit more and a new pin put in to hold the Bi metal spring . we did not get a chance to set the timing because of the be be's as they were rapping and sure as all get out did not want to run the engine up to PTO speed to set it . The one thing i forgot to show him was how to get the carb and gov. set so she would work to her max.We Also went thru his owner's manual and he read for himself WHAT GAS is to be run in that tractor. He was telling me that they also have a 656 Hydro and it is not running well and he knows now how to handle that himself. He will need to get some new parts and i told him he knows how to get ahold of me if he runs into problems. BTW Andy is a fine young man and has a nice family and a nice small farm with mostly RED iron with just a hint of that off color Green.

That is what is called hands on, good for you Vet. I am sure he appreciated your work and advice.

Tractorvet, you wrote: "BTW Andy is a fine young man and has a nice family and a nice small farm with mostly RED iron with just a hint of that off color Green. "

Guess we can forgive that small green transgression.

Yes he is , We all need to help each other out and yea it was over a 130 miles from my door step to his all i asked for was gas money , heck that was bad enough today. Me . Pete and Owen can set here and try to tell ya what is wrong and we all can miss something BUT let us get in there and look things over then we can tell ya a lot better. When i heard his video of the tractor running i could tell it was a timing and fuel issue . The advance was not working in the dist. as the springs were stretched now as for the timing set we did not get to that JUST YET . But trust me that 656 will pull that disc in third if not forth highside when done . I am not done with tweeking it .

Pete it was a vary enjoyable day even though it was on and off rain and a 130 mile drive one way . Andy is young and he wants to learn . So why not try and share what we know as we are not going to be around forever. I have no boys to teach what i have learned from the time i was 13 to today . Young guys today are not into engines .Vary few can even change oil them selfs , they think a hot car is something ya can hear the boom box five miles away . My idea of a hot car was a 11 second street machine but looked like mom's grocery getter like my 61 Ford rag top Supper quiet real close to stock looking but up close you could see the hood shaking and hear the ping from the headers and the violent whipping of the antenna from the loop of the cam.

I am very glad you are on the scene. My first impression was of a tractor that needed attantion, not teardown and rebuild (which was Andy's first impulse). Making the tractor run correctly before a major is started sure makes far more sense than wondering why it still runs the same after fixing so much.
Thanks again for your generosity. Jim

He is still in for a tear down as to how far ??????. HE may have to replace two pistons and have the head machined . A work to the wise here If your exhaust manifold has a hole don't weld it on the tractor and when done welding make sure ya get all the bee bee's as they do get into the engine and make neat marks on the top of the pistons and also in the bottom of the head.. Ya think your saving money by welding but one little OOOOOpppppppssssss and ya have more tied up in engine repairs.

i surely do appreciate your help vet. i got the head off and began to file out th holes. how far down do i need to go all the way to the bottom of the holes or less? thanks again

Filing beyond the surface to the bottom is probably not a good idea as it would remove some compression. The vet has seen what you are discussing, so go with his input. Starting a new thread is probably going to catch his eye, (or email him) Jim
