3 pt Lift 2400B (454)

I have a 2400B industrial tractor which is suppose to be the same as a 454 that I have some hydraulic issues with. Whenever I attach a heavy implement like a 1000 lb plow and begin to lift the implement my tractor makes grinding noises similar to when you shift gears at high rpms. After the implement begins to lift it quits. Also after plowing and the engine is hot, I really have to rev the engine up to high rpms to lift plow again. Haven't been able to get much advice from local repair shop. I replaced the pump and relief valve last year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Max, some questions, you replaced the pump in the transmission and the relief valve in the MCV? Not familiar with 2400B but know 454. I believe 2400B has two hydraulic pumps, one in transmission like 454 to run 3pt, PS and PB and another front mounted one running off crankshaft for backhoe and loader.
Does your parking brake work?

The pump that I replaced was on the MCV. It is the only pump on the tractor that I am aware of. The tractor no longer has a loader or backhoe.

Hi Max, if the gear like chatter is coming from the area of the clutch housing, it is probably the PTO spline shaft where it is driven by the pressure plate. The teeth in the pressure plate become worn and the slop with the PTO causes the chatter. The hydraulic pump is run off the PTO shaft. This will be fixed the next time you do a clutch job. If the teeth on the pressure plate completely strip the PTO shaft will stop and no hydraulics.

Re 3pt not lifting properly, could be clogged hydraulic filter from chewed up parking brake material, or MCV splitter valve diverting to much flow to PS, oil cooler and PB or dirt in unloader valve.
From Bernard le mécano Québec Canada,
The unloading valve is under the seat and behind the big plug. Remove the plug and pull the spool, make sure to replace in the same way. It has a small orifice, blow dirt out with air. Replace the spool then the plug. Start the engine and check the lift system.

Also could be, the suction strainer is plugged. It's on the suction line, on rear end of the pipe. Drain the hydraulic oil, put a 3/4 allen tool on big plug and remove it, the strainer is inside the elbow, unscrew it and clean with solvent. Clean the dirt out of elbow.

The easy way to diagnose hydraulic problems is performing the flow and pressure tests as outline in shop manual.
