SUPER A TIMING MARK

TRACTORNAA

New User
JUST PURCHASED 1954 SUPER A THAT BELONGED TO MY GRAND-DAD FOR MY SON. NOT RUNNING AND NOW TRYING TO ESTABLISH CORRECT DISTRIBUTOR TIMING; FLYWHEEL HAS 2 WHITE DOTS ABOUT 3" APART. I HAVE MANUALS BUT NO MENTION OF 2 MARKS. THX

Both my owner's manual and the I&T shop manual only reference one mark on the flywheel with a DC above, and 1-4 below the mark, no reference to a second mark. I would get #1 piston coming up on compression, making sure it's the correct stroke and go by which dot is closest to the timing mark, and make note of it for future reference.
Hopefully someone else can add more info on the second dot as I have not come across this yet.
Hope this helps, at least a little bit.

A PO MAY have made the two white marks, one for TDC and the "earlier" one corresponding to advanced running timing when checked with a timing light at rated RPM's.

It's EASY to determine if the TDC mark is correct by inserting length of copper wire or a drinking straw into the #1 sparkplug hole and SLOWLY bringing #1 up on TDC by hand cranking and noting the point at which the wire or straw rises to it's highest level.

Do you have a dist or soes it have a mag. Are the wires going to the cap in the correct pattern #1 is at the 2 oclock position #3 at 4 and #4 at 8 and #2 at 10 sometimes things get all mixed up afret all its only 50 pluss yrs old and who knows what has been done. Those timinf marks arent that important anyway just get #1 on tdc and then you can adjust the dist to line the rotoe on #1 wire. when it starts you can turn the dist where the engine soulds the best and you wont be off berry much.

No doubt the trailing mark is TDC and the leading mark (to the left viewing back to front) is the advance setting mark. I put a white mark on mine and use a strobe light. Should be 14 deg advance for gasoline engines.

I don't have a C113/123 as new as a 1954, but the three 113's I have do not have dots, but a single very fine mark at TDC. As indicated someone put those marks on it. As gene says, If you install the wires, distributer and rotor correctly, and put it on TDC it will start. Also when #1 is on TDC that mark is a lot easier to find.

Thanks for your comments, all very helpful. My wife got a kick of my asking for a straw to work on the tractor but it works so well. All set up, adjusted and ready to go now. thanks again
