Not trying to step on anyones toes, but a few posts below some one answered that IH diesels all had 12 volt neg. ground, Well my 57 450D which my dad bought in the early 70"s, as far as I can tell is original, is 12 volt pos. ground with what appears to be the original generator.
Just put the battery back in yesterday and was working on the driveway for about 5 hours, felt good to have her back out working again after a long cold winter.

All Farmall six volt tractors were positive ground. All Farmall twelve volt tractors were positive ground untill about 1958 or 1959 when they became negative ground.

A bit OT, but IHC trucks thru 56 were 6 v pos gnd, 57 was 12 v pos gnd, 58 changed to 12 v neg gnd.
I seriously doubt that they would build 2 different systems at the same time. Makes more economic sense to spread parts use over as many units as possible.

I learned a long time ago to check before I changed the battery, IH can be either way, it just depends when it was built.
