240U starter

240U starter quit on me. Had been spinning but the drive was not engaging every time. It would eventually catch and spin the motor, but sometimes I would have to hit the button 3 or 4 times before it would catch. Then about 3 or 4 weeks ago it started "clicking" the solenoid but sometimes not spinning the starter. I could tap on the solenoid with a wrench and it would make contact. Then this week it would not not spin even tapping on the solenoid. Took it off and to an "auto electric" shop. Guy said if it was still a 6v. starter that could be the reason it was not engaging the drive all the time... spinning to quickly before engaging. He can switch the field windings to 12v. for $40 something and is fixing whatever else is wrong. Drive gear was badly worn, solenoid is probably shot and who knows what else. Hope I get it back for less than a couple bills.

Make sure the new style drive is installed. Check the ring gear (in the hole where the starter was removed) if the teethe at the spot where the starter engages is more than 30% or so worn off (tooth length) I would recommend replacing the ring gear (splitting is needed to do that). If the teeth are still pretty long but flattaned and burred over, using a dremel tool to dress them to make a clean tooth shape is a good idea. The teeth will be worn 180 degrees away from that location where the engine stops naturally with the pistons about 1/2 the way up. (or down) Jim

Thanks Jim... not being a mechanic I never thought of an engine stopping at the same places all the time. What I could see without a light, the ring gear didn't look bad. Will shine a light in there and see how it looks. Don't have a Dremmel, but do have a die grinder and air compessor. I imagine he will install whatever is the latest replacement drive for that starter... didn't know there was a better design. I've never had this guy work on anything before, but have heard nothing but good things about his work. I have coffee with some guys that have old tractors and they all seem to use him.
