What amp fuse should go in the fuse holder on a farmall H? Had some 1 amp fuses I tried and they blew as soon as the lights were turned on-- do I need a different fuse or start looking for shorts?

If it is still 6V with stock lights, then it should have a 20 amp fuse. If converted to 12 V with stock lights, then a 10 or 15 amp will work.

Beg to differ with you Gene, but 1133 bulbs draw 3.91 amps at 6.2 volts. In addition, those old 6 volt generators were lucky to put out 10 amps in the best of conditions. IH as cheap as they were on electrical stuff wouldn,t have designed a lighting system that draws 18 amps and only put a 10 amp generator on it.

They call the bulbs 35 watts so amps times volts is what i based the fuse on. With the system in shape the ammeter will show pretty good discharge without engine running anyhow isnt the fuse supposed to be 20 amp

The original fuse call out was 20 amps. The fuse needs to be large enough to have some capacity left above the initial surge when the lights are turned on. Otherwise, they would blow when there was no need.

The 1133 bulbs were rated 32 cp which is considerably weaker than 35 watts. Some of the later sealed beam lights were 35 watts but by then the charging system had been beefed up. The original cut-out systems only charged 9 - 11 amps after they warmed up, which was marginal on keeping up with 3 lights. While cold they would charge a little more.
