Any Guesses... (Pic)

I brought a 1955 Farmall 400 home last fall and hadn't really touched it yet. It ran well, but did leak fuel out of the carb when the tractor was shut off. I knocked the carb off last night to give it some TLC and this is what I found in the bowl. I'm not sure what it is, but it's of a thick consistency and relatively gummy. I found it no where else in the carb. I figured for sure there would be more at the needle or seat since it would have had to pass through there to get to the bowl, but found nothing. I tossed the carb body and guts in some Hydro-Seal II and it came out shining like new. I then rebuilt it this morning and the old girl runs like a champ, but what's the green stuff. Hmmmmmm...

Could it possibly be gas line pipe dope? That stuff is non-harnening and is greenish in color. Somebody's poor attempt at a gasket? Maybe you should check the other fuel fittings also if you think it could be pipe dope.

Whatever it is didn't get in through the fuel system. It was put in there with the carb. apart like you have it, and it ran down with the bowl setting on its side, or turned over. Possibly someone trying to seal a crack in the bowl?

Bob, my thoughts exactly. I've seen that same exact color of green material, and it was in a repair that someone had done.
