Why no hoop drawbar on the C?

Thinking about a reply I just made to the 1-bottom plow thread...

Every letter series tractor has a factory hoop drawbar, except the C/Super C.

The Super C I bought off ebay a couple of years ago (must've had cooties because it went cheap) has a hoop drawbar adapted from an Allis Chalmers or something, and it really makes the tractor handy. Without it, you've got to be a monkey to get on the tractor.

I've never seen another C-style tractor with a hoop drawbar.

Why didn't IH offer a hoop drawbar for the C's?

It was an option i had a C that had one. The ones for the H will fit. You need the step i build for the C,SC sure makes getting on and off easier.

Both C's I have came (used) with a hoop drawbar, one had a sickle mower attached to it. As Gene implied, that drawbar fits everything from the C through at least the 560. I don't know if the swinging part can be adapted, I don't think so.

Option, or a farmer modification like mine?

It's not listed in the parts book, and my manual does not show a hoop drawbar available.

The C has a hexagon axle housings, while the larger tractors have square axle housings. I don't see how the H/M style hoop will fit without modification.

With all the mounted equipment that attached to the rear axles, I think it would have gotten in the way. I like the factory set-up, myself.

I bolted a steel plate onto the draw bar of my C too make it a little easier to get on and off. Although I still have to climb around the Saginaw 3 pt. I have on it. I have been looking at making a step on the front. The older I get the harder it is getting on and off.

The one i had did. It went up north with the planter ,cult an plow. The buyer has 40a and wants every model of the Cs and SCs with all the implements he can get never needs to change implements they are all factory original not restored just works them

The advertising materials for the C do not show the large horseshoe shaped drawbar arrangement that you find on other letter tractors. Specifically mentioned is that the smaller swinging drawbar arrangement does not have to be removed when using direct connect implements. The wording "regularly equipped" is used to describe the installation. This would indicate that there was probably an option although it is not listed in the special equipment section of the ad. Possibly this was something offered later in production as an aftermarket attachment? The ad I am reading is for the C and there could have been changes made later.

I don't believe IH ever offered the U-shaped drawbar for the C. As already stated, they were working closely with the concept of using direct-attach implements most of the time. If you use the C axle clamps that were needed with mowers, cultivators etc, the H or other drawbars will bolt right on. The quick-attach drawbar from a later F-12 goes right on and is heavy enough for a C.

Cs and Super Cs were very popular where I lived at the time and never saw one with the "hoop" drawbar... home made or otherwise. Can't see any advantage to them unless you want someone to ride behind you standing on it.

H one bolts right on

Back in the days when the tractors were new the swinging drawbar was handy for lots of stuff. You let the swinging one move so when you turned the hitch moving side ways let you make tighter turns with a harrow and the disc pulling the wagon to the side so scooping the ground feed into the hog feeders got the wagon closer and the list goes on. Farming was tons different then. Always had a couple hundred hogs out in the pasture cleaner place cooler and no manure to haul but you did haul the ground feed to them. Pulling the windrower to one side so you had untouched stubble to law the windrew on and the list goes on.Hey we even got by without live pto and power steering.

The hex axle housings make no difference, the clamps may be different, the drawbar is the same. In fact, I took the one off my C and put it on my 460 to move it after I took off the fast hitch to get it repaired.

We have had one on our SC for years. It was put on after my grandmother put the hay rake on the right hand tire from turning too sharp and nearly killed herself. The hoop and triangle plate were added to extend the draw bar out far enough so that the rake was further away from the tires. Never had that problem again.

I bought a c a couple years ago that had one. I use the regular drawbar for wagons. I then leave a ball hitch on one side of the hoop for other trailers and a clevis on the other side for pulling brush.

(quoted from post at 18:08:24 04/27/11) I bought a c a couple years ago that had one. I use the regular drawbar for wagons. I then leave a ball hitch on one side of the hoop for other trailers and a clevis on the other side for pulling brush.

I have an H drawbar laying in the barn and might put it on my Super C for this reason. I use it for pulling our haywagon and our small trailer (for brush, wood, moving things, ect) but the haywagon uses a tongue style hitch with a hole in it and the small trailer uses a 2" ball and I get sick of putting on and removing the hitch ball all the time!
