The batteries on my 656 boil out acid.- Have new reg. new heavy gauge cables, old resistor. Whats wrong? Thanks DTK.

What is the voltage when the engine is running? It could be the batteries. I had one in a tractor that boiled for over three years before it gave up.

Just because the regulator is new, doesn't mean it's GOOD, or hooked up correctly.

Your batteries are boiling because they're being overcharged, so something is wrong with your charging system.

Start the tractor and put a meter on the batteries. It should start out at up to 14.7 Volts, then taper off slowly as the batteries get charged back up from running the starter.

FYI, battery cables have NOTHING to do with the problem.

or is it even the right regulator? or is it still needed due to on the farm modifications...
There were 2 charging systems on 656s: generator vs. alternator; both use regulators and the regulators are not interchangeable although anything is possible. You could also have a more modern alternator added on the farm that doesn"t require the regulator, which means it needs service itself.

hope you figure out which system you have!

HI Guys, My alt. puts out 14.7 volts at the starter and went down to 13.2 after tractor was running for 10 min. Each batt. put out about 6.3 volts w/tractor shut off. Batt. terminals were pretty black looking & one cable bolt was almost eaten through. I checked out the reg. and alt. numbers w/local IH dealer -they are correct. So I am hoping it was cables and connections that were causing the problem. Sorry for the long post. Any other info. would be appreciated. Thanks DTK

My boss's dad has an 01 Dodge, the battery was always slobbering and the cables always corroded, until the battery bit the dust and he stuck a new one in it. Sometimes they will act like that.

The battery in the 435 Farmtrack I had boiled from the day it was delivered. It was three years old last summer when it gave up and I had to change it. The new one stayed dry.
