How do you turn on the 1000 rpm pto on from the 540 on the International 656. I know mine has the daul speed pto but I dont know how to turn it on.
 
656 doesnt have 1000 pto(540 only).IH tractors that have 540/1000 pto have 2 shafts-540 on bottom,1000 on top.the same lever engages them both simultainiously.If you want/need 1000 you need a 706 or bigger
 
You have either OR not both. You can change from 540 to 1000 BUT there is no mystery switch , lever , button to go from one to the other. To go from 540 to 1000 there are gears to change up in the ft. ahead to the T/A and the out put shaft on the unit . This will require major tear down of the tractor to do so .
 
Yep. as all that i have been around i have only seen 540's BUT the book say that you could have either or . It is the fact that with less then 70 H/P your a little light in that dept. for 1000 rpm equipment. I have never seen a chopper that has a 1000 shaft run with much less the a 150 ponies in ft. of it.
 
A 756 has the 2speed pto,656 does not(they are two 'different' tractors).The same lever engages them both at the same time.Does your tractor have 2 pto shafts,or one?
 
I dont remember off hand I think just one. I think that your right because the dual speed ptos on all IHs that i know of have two shafts. But I thouht maybe the 656 might of had a deal where you pull the pto shaft and turn it around and put it back in like alot of other machines.
