Bought f 400 gas with 12 volt generator conversion. Gauge going wild side to side . Sent genny to shop they overhauled it and starter I went back with new reg. gauge, wires.same rebuilt genny and still doing same thing no change.Any ideas or advise appreciated. Tony

Old gauges can be dry of the internal dampening fluid used on the very small bearings holding the needle. The regulators and generators are very electrically noisy and produce good voltage and charge well while the contacts vibrate and chatter to control output, making the amp gauge go wild. A new meter might make the issue go away. A 100mfd 300volt electrolytic capacitor to ground attached to the Load side of the meter might also dampen it some. Jim

The use of a replacement new meter should do it, but checking it with one that doesn't shake but isn't new might avoid the purchase of a meter you don't need. Jim

BOTTOM line is... is it keeping the battery charged?

Unless you have some modern, sensitive, exotic electrical equipment installed (GPS, perhaps), if the charging system is keeping the battery charged, don't fret over the gyrations of the ammeter.

Could it be a bad armiture in genny causing the excitement in the system?? I have new gauge, regulator, wires, I can't leave it this way I have no Idea if its charging or discharging. Battery is new so not had time to go dead.Tony

I would think that the guy who rebuilt your generator would've checked it out and made sure it was worth rebuilding before rebuilding it... If the armature was bad he wouldn't have rebuilt it for you.

A new, generic ammeter gauge can be purchased for maybe $10 to $15. Might be the easiest way to know if the problem is with the gauge or somewhere else.
