H Fuel ADJ Screw Leak

I am rebuilding my 53 H carb hoping to eliminate the leak at the fuel screw adj. What is the best way to remove old packing? Seems to be pretty tuff material. I have slid the new packing over the screw and it doesn't fit tightly? Does this cinch down on screw once the fuel nut is tightened into place? There was a cupped rubber oring that I have removed that does not show on parts list. I read the threads on tapping the needle into the seat to help in sealing...yeah or nay on this/ Thank you.

Remove the old packing by using a small, pointed object such as a small screwdriver, and just dig the old packing out. It will crumble into tiny pieces. Be sure to get ALL of it out.

NEVER, I repeat NEVER tap the needle into the seat, and NEVER polish that needle with emery cloth or anything else. Doing so will cause problems with how it fits, and it WILL cause problems.

DO spray the needle AND the seat with carb cleaner, blow them dry, and then spray a tiny amount of silicon lubricant on the needle and inside the seat.

Ok, I have all of that old packing out. When I install new packing there are only 1 or 2 threads visible. Am I correct in thinking that I should screw the fuel adj fully in to the fuel nut prior to screwing the fuel nut into the carb? Just as soon not screw this up the first time. Thank you RustyF.....

Are you sure you got all of the old packing out? There should be more than just one or two threads showing.

The needle needs to be screwed into the nut just enough so the packing can be slipped onto it. If you go too far the needle will jam into the jet before you get the nut screwed in far enough. There are no explicit instructions on how to do it, and I don't have time right now to write a book. The best I can tell you is to take it slowly, think about what you are doing, and question everything you do before you do it. Also, try to understand what the engineers who designed that carburetor were thinking when they did it that way.

RustyF there are two threads exposed once the packing is inserted. I have it all out. My question was is the intent of the packing to be compressed by fuel nut around the fuel adjust. Ie once you tighten this down the packing is forced to take the shape of the cavity it is in. Thanks....
