smta lp serial #

I have a smta lp was wondering if it has the lp pistons or was original. #65692DGS. What does the DGS mean?? The tank goes the long way but is still alot higher then hood. Any help would be great.

Lots of SMTA LP tractors that were shipped to another company to be switched to LP were equiped from IH with what was called 5000 or 8000 foot altitude pistons. D was 5000 and E was 8000. They were higher compression pistons for gasoline engines originaly for use at higher elevations to overcome some power loss. LP tractors run better with the higher compression.
G means the tractor was equiped with a cotton picker at one time. Does the tractor set at normall height or have flanges with bolt holes at the outer ends of the rear axle housings?
You probably have what some call a factory LP, some say no factory SMTA LP tractors. My opinion is no LP were built at Farmall outside of maybe a few trial ones. Respect other opinions that disagree though and know my opinion is not based 100 % on facts I can prove. So thats why I say opinion, it could be wrong.

I presume #65692DGS is the tractor serial #? If yes, then per Guy Fay's "IHC Tractor Data Book":

D = 5,000 ft altitude
G = high drum cotton picker attachment
S = T/A with provision for live PTO.

However the book also lists "C" for LPG fuel and "N" for LPG fuel above 2,500 ft altitude. Would seem then your tractor should have both C and N in the suffix, if it came factory-equipped to burn LPG and for high altitude operation.

jmducks1, The quintessential SMTA-LP has a longwise tank(as you described) with a mono-valve assembly at the 11:00 position at the rear of the tank (if you are sitting in the seat). This tank set up probably came from Lubbock or San Angelo Texas. Though there were 4 other tank companies scattered through out the Deep South.
Pics would be nice to see. If you would like to visit about your tractor or the SMTA-LP series Hollar at me 512-577-3837. I will be glad to tell you all I know about it. Hope this helps!

whats all wrong with the one in ILL? I see the nose is incorrect and the vaporizer hangs there. DId you look at it? Get back to me.

I did not go see it but, I talked to him and the hood has been cut all along the tank. The ID plate for the tank has been removed. Vaporizer or carb do not appear to be correct. The distributor is not the original. Serial number appears to indicate cotton picker but rear does not indicate that. Too many red flags for me.
