1939 faa 1853 is hand crank. was told the last part of that 1st year they quit the crank, and put starters on. true or false? thanks...

First with starter option was in 1941 when built. Think IH sold some parts or kits to change early tractors over.

Starter were always an option. They did make kits for earlier models to convert. First factory starter FAA 18282 March 18 1940

I was thinking the factory didn't ship one out under regular production with a center housing to take a starter until until 1941 at around serial 54,xxx or in that area.

The first place to loook is the Parts Catalog. Things that aren't in it can often be found in attachment installation instructions or service bulletins. The parts catalogs are easy to find, in fact anyone working on one of these tractors should own a copy. The other two are a little harder to find but some of the information from them can be found in secondary references (like Guy Fay's books).

This is what the parts book showes about it. Notice no starter opening.

I have serial number 1482 Farmall A and it has the starter option on it. In other words, the mounting hole, but no starter. It's a crank start.

Now this is one of the first 1000 built, so I think things were in a state of flux, meaning, things were changing all the time.

I had someone tell me that mine wasn't that old. However, the engine block serial number and the serial number plate located on the pan that wraps around under the pedals have the same serial number. I believe mine is a true 1939. The guy that told me that was one of those smart -a.. kinds of guys anyway. He hauled a piece of paper out of his wallet to show me the serial numbers. I already knew the serial numbers, so do I need his help?

Go with what you've got. Sounds like a '39 to me.

What is the date code on your bell housing? IH had a field attachment for changing over earlier tractors for a starter.
