So i took out the forward left screw on the top plate to allow the 42 H to go into 5th.It came on steel so it was locked out.well it felt like it was in 5th but it didnt move.I tryed a bunch of times even with the tractor off and the fan didnt move at all when in 5th.Do you guys think it came without 5th??

Doug - An H cannot "come without 5th gear".

An H can be shipped with 5th locked out with the special bolt in the deck plate. However unless 4th gear is also missing (ie. the 4th/5th sliding gear omitted on the mainshaft) there's no way 5th can be left out.

More likely either the 4th/5th shifter rail is not sliding far enough forward to engage 5th. Or (a long shot) possibly is many hours of careless operation have worn the teeth from the 5th gear sliding clutch.

I'd take off the belt pulley gearbox and look at the 4th/5th slider and clutch gear to see if they are intact. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that one or both of the parts have had the engaging components milled off for safety purposes. The bolt was also added to prevent "overshifting" of the yoke. The previous owner could have been hiring kids as summer help. Most people back then, including kids, knew enough to remove the 5th gear lockout bolt. What kid hasn't had the urge to "joyride"?

To add to my previous post, I can remember working at a golf course when I was 17. I used to like "getting air" with the crappy 3-wheeled Cushman utility vehicle. Stuff happens.

I'll have to take a look inside.I don't think its worn out because it doesn't make any sound at all.If it was worn I would think I'd here something. So I'm think your right about not going far enough to engauge. Thanks I'll check it out.

Just a double check question. Did you remove a 3/8 diameter bolt from a recessed hole or a 7/16 diameter bolt from top cover? If the 3/8 bolt was removed a 3/4 inch long one or shorter should be installed back in the hole to seal it.

There isn't much to that 5th gear. It could certainly have ground off enough that nothing catches at all anymore. Once you get in there you will see why. It actully slides over another gear and only meshes with about half of the tooth.

I think you're on the right track (shift rail not moving far enough to engage 5th). And another possible cause for this is a worn shift lever.

You might try pulling the lever (knock out the pivot pin at the base tower then lift out the lever). Then take a LARGE screwdriver, stick it in the notch in the right most shifter rail and use it to lever the rail as forward as far as it will go. (It might help to rock the tractor a bit as you work the shift lever).

If it now catches 5th gear, check the shift lever tip and pivot parts for excessive wear.

A 1942? Wouldn't this tractor have come from the factory on steel due to war time provisions, and have the 5th gear blocked out?

Might be wrong.

Actually, fifth would be the left most rail, slid forward.

It's backward of the gear position on the lever.

That's why guys were asking if he took that bolt out and tried it.
