My father-in-laws '53 Super H has been making a noise in the front part of the transmission, We tore it down and found the front bearing as well as the pilot bearing bad.We have the front shaft out.My question is
if there is a little play, about a half inch or so ,in the main or pinion shaft, Do we need to finish tearing it down to get to the rear bearing or is this normal because we have the front shaft out?

Main shaft will have some side to side or up and down movement at the front with input shaft removed. Forward and back or very much back and forth rotation would be a cause for concern. Although the main shaft gear backlash can't be acurately checked unless the input shaft is in place with good bearings. May also be a good idea to remove the pulley gear box or cover to check for any pieces that may have fell to bottom of housing. also can help when installing the input back in.

Thanks! We have removed the pulley gearbox and I think we will remove the top plate just to get a look at the rear bearing. Thank's again JRV
