I have a 674 that I bought cheap and thought about using in place of the ford 5000.Are there any inherent flaws in this design? Anything that needs to be watched? First hand comments appreciated.

We had a 574 for years and loved it. Never had any problems with it except the exhaust stub pipe in the manifold worked loose once in awhile. Wish we had that one back. DK

I don't know the Ford, so I can't compare the two - I am quite happy with the 574 I bought new in '75 and still have though - Some say the parking brake on these will have problems, mine's still working fine.

The 674 is the ancestor of the 684, 685, 695, and 4210.

Later series tractors have a "double H" shift pattern, and an optional torque amplifier. Other than the hood design, very little changed over the years AFAIK.

If they keep a tractor design around that long, there must be something good about it.

We had a 674 on the farm when I was growing up - It was our main tillage tractor, ran hay wagons from the field, and had a mounted corn chopper. My Grandpa bought it new in '72 or '73 and my dad had it until he had to auction off the farm in '87. In all that time the only problem I ever remember happening all the time was the brakes loosing pressure and we would have to bleed them at least once a year. It was a good tractor in my opinion. Enjoyed my seat time on it very much. - Brian

Just a question here, any problems with the Ford? I was under the impression that the 5000 was a good tractor.

The parking brake will continue to work fine as long as you remember to release it. I had a 574 and the parking brake always worked fine. When I sold it I pointed out the problem to the new owner. Needless to say he took out the parking brake the first day.

We also have a 72 574 on the farm and we bought it in 74 with 400hrs on it and it now has 18000hrs, Did the motor at 15000hrs due to a sleeve seal and other than that we have not had a minutes problem with it, and the parking break works perfect to. Im not familiar with the fords so i can't answer that part of your question.

I've run a ford 5000 and an IH 574 both for many hours. Liked the 574 better. Open platform without all the darn shifters in the way. All necessary controls were at your right hand, synchronized transmission (no gear grinding to shift), short turning radius and not shy on power. Also our 574 had an inline shift patern for 1-2-3-4 and then another lever for high low reverse, but no t/a. Gives you a gear for everything. Thats a real nice feature especially when clearing snow with a back blade or doing loader work. The ford was slow, hard to shift cleanly, and seemed to take 40 acres to turn around. Also it only had 2 reverse gears. One was too fast and the other was painfully slow. No dual power in the ford.
