M wheels on an H

I"m trying this post again. It, apparently, didn"t post a while ago.

Anyhow, I"m looking at an H for a restore and noticede it had M rear wheels on it as there was an M sitting next to it. The seller said this was the hot setup for an H. Is there any truth to this? Why?

The reason that the seller gave said it made the H pull better.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

This H I was looking at was sitting beside an M and the wheels were the same size.

Now that i know what to look for, I'll go have another looksee.

I might end up going for the M. It was only a few hundred more and was in better mechanical shape. No 12 volt conversion or anything like that.

Thanks again.

the tires and rims are the same between the 2, only difference could be like 11 X 38 or 12 X 38, etc., tires. The cast hub will not interchange. I think he either doesnt know, or hes just trying to sell you a tractor! If I had o guess, he is trying to sell you a tractor

"Wheels" was the term used to me. I didn't know enough to question the use of the term.

It just threw up a flag to me that bigger wheels off a bigger tractor would make the H pull better.

Will the M rims bolt to the H centers?

Thanks.

John,

Anybody who told me that an "H will pull better" with M wheels would make me wonder what else was wrong with either of those 2 tractors.

"Hot setup"! Indeed. Maybe you need to broaden your search??

If the H's engine is stock, good 11-38 (12.4-38) tires on stock rims and wheels are plenty big enough to harness all the power and put it to the ground that the engine can deliver. You can put wider rims on the stock H wheel centers if you've got some sort of a strong engine built up in the H. How could you tell the wheels on the H were M wheels anyway? Did they have some sort of shims around the axle? Or was it just because the tires were the same size as the tires on the M?

Both the M and the H used 38" tires on 38" rims. There are many different width rims though. Usually, the H had 10" wide rims and and M had 12" wide rims. There were optional widths as well. The rims are interchangeable between the two. The HUBS (the cast iron center part) are NOT interchangable as the axles are different sizes.

I'd thought of that too. One or the other will be started and driven before my hard earned bucks are plunked down.

These two tractors aren't my only options. They are just close to home and I really wanted a Farmall H or an M.

Thanks.

Just because the tires were the same size as on the M.

I'm not that knowledgeable on Farmalls and, since the H was noticeably smaller than the M, I assumed the wheels would be too. "Wheels" was the term used to me; not "Rims."

Thanks.

What he said.

"Wheel" is commonly used to describe the entire hub/rim/tire assembly.

However, sometimes "wheel" is used interchangeably with "hub."

There is no way a "wheel" from an M will fit on an H, regardless of which way the word is used.

The rims are interchangeable. Both are a standard 38" "drop center" type.

It is common to see an M with 13.6x38 tires, or an H with 13.6x38 tires. 13.6x38 is the stock size for an M, and oversize for an H. This size is a little small on an M, and a little large on an H, but workable either way.

The tires could easily be 14.9x38, which is starting to get too large for the H, but about right for the M. Bigger than that, and someone's been tweaking that H for pulling, and you don't want it as a farm tractor.

If you go back, get the tire sizes, and post them up here.

Depneds onwhat you want the tractor to do... If it is a toy, take the H... If you plan to actually plow or run a large brush hog once in a while then go for the M...

denny-o

A lot of M's have too small of rims for the 14.9s (technically) They start to pinch on a 12" rim and are just about as effective as a 13.6. At least when you are tractor pulling, but I would guess there is some relavance in the field.
An stock H could certainly use "M" (13.6) tires. The pizza cutters they came with don't have near the pull on a plow as a size or two bigger.
