856 to a 12 volt system

856 is 12 volt. They use 2 6 volt batterys wired in series=12 volts.2 12 volt batterys wired in parallell=12 volt.BUT,2 6s will have lots more power than 2 12s.If your tractor is hard starting, you may have a bad battery,if so, replace them both.

it is just the time and money to get two 12V bats. new bat. cables and depending on the batterys to build a bat. box.
allmost all ih tractors use two 6V bats. linked in searies insted of one or two 12V bats huked up in paralell to the starter, all other electical parts are 12V.

good luck :)

To answer your question, zero work, and $0. It's already 12V.

Nowadays, you can get single 12V batteries with every bit as much "juice" as the dual 6V's that the 856 came with originally. All you need to do is find a place to put it on the tractor.

The dual 6V batteries are a pain because you have twice as many connections to maintain.

My Allis Chalmers 180 has two 12V Group 31 batteries, each rated at 1100 CA. That is 2200 CA in parallel. I have yet to see two 6V batteries that can compare and fit into a stock battery box. 40 years ago two 6's were superior.
In many redundant power systems and solar storage systems, 6V and 8V DEEP CYCLE batteries can out perform the same size 12V batteries. More lead = more capacity.

you may have a week starter that needs a rebuild also. try 2 new bat first with nice clean connections. if that doest cure pull starter and get rebuild with new selinoid

Thanks guys,I didn't make my question very clear.I meant to ask if I were able to put one 12 volt on if it would help with cold starting or not worth the effort. Sometimes its hard for me to type what I mean LOL!!!

Depends on what you put in there. A small 12 volt isn't going to do much good. My 1206 start right down to about -30F with the original battery setup (2 6 volts) and the either assist. Startes even better if I plug in the tank heater about 4 hours before starting when that cold.
