42 Steel wheel H

There is a 5th gear lockout screw located just forward and left of the gearshift base. The lockout screw prevents the left shift fork from moving forward to engage 5th.

DON'T unlock it unless you've converted to rubber. Steel is uncontrollable at higher speeds and you could have a SERIOUS mishap!

I don't consider it a problem because the H won't roll in 5th with steel wheels. I tried it several times when I was still on the farm. This was in soft ground, as I knew better on hard ground, even 4th would shake my teeth out. I really doubt if it would have moved anyway. The tractor came with rubber, we used narrow steel for cultivating in narrow rows, so it wasn't locked out.

IIRC the parts book says how long of a shorter bolt to put in the hole. I'm sure you could find it by searching as well. All it really needs to do is fill the hole and hit the threads.

My uncle had a '50 H with the optional 7 MPH 4th gear. We put a set of steel wheels on it one winter to skid logs with. The steel wheels did the job because the ground in the woods didn't freeze hardly at all, but out in the field where we stockpiled the logs the ground froze pretty solid and the H got shook pretty bad when we slipped her in 4th to go back into the woods, but boy, they worked good when the ground thawed a little and got "savvy". I sold the steel wheels to an Amish guy in 1984 for 300 dollars, they were still like new, they'd been kept inside...wish I had them now to show on our restored '51 H once in a while....Oh well.
