Cub 154 idles but won't run

Please help! Friday night i mowed with my "new" 154 for over an hour. I go out Sunday to mow and it starts as usual, idles but will only run at full throttle for a minute or 2. Starts right back up and the same thing. I am assuming something has gotten into the carb but just wanted your thoughts.

Fuel delivery to the carb. Check the sediment bowl, fuel line, and screen at the carb. If it has a filter grafted into the line, replace it with a piece of tubing (no filter should be there) If a filter is desired, it should be from NAPA and be intended for gravity based systems. The tank connection to the sediment bowl is also a suspect.
Fuel should come out of the line at the carb into a can at about 1 qt/min try it there first. Jim

Jim is right on, except for the inline filter(there should be one there):)
It's about 50/50 on this site and others as to their use.

Irregardless, something is blocking fuel, whether from the tank (which I suspect) or somewhere in the carb. You might take the main jet out of the carb and blow it and the fitting out. My cub did the same thing, it was a piece of crud in the main jet.

Thanks guys. The tank runs out good. Forgive my ignorance but can I take the main jet out with out removing the entire carb?

It's starving for fuel, if it runs fine then starts to cut out. It can't replenish it in the carb as fast as it uses it.

Tony,
You do not have to remove carb, it is a simple procedure to clean main jet.
Facing the carb, look on the lower right (towards seat) there you will see a brass hex head. That is the main jet. Turn it out and the jet comes out in one piece. Blow the hole out and/or gently use a small wire to clear the passage.

You may have to do this several times till you clear all crud out of line.
(That is the reason I use inline filter on all my tractors, but again it is a personal choice)

You may be able to go to farmallcub.com and look at there manuals pages for a pic of the carb. Or on IH parts site.

In additon to what other have said, this actually sounds like a sticky float to me.......or a bit of crud in the needle valve seat. However, nothing wrong with the other suggestions. if you are going to clean out the carb, might as well do it all.........cub carbs are some of the simplest ones to work on.
