Do head stud treads need to be sealed at the block?
Also When I threaded them in all the way some were
just a bit too short. Can you have some threads
showing at block? ...Tim

I have always been told that the studs need to be al the way down with no threads showing. Some are blind holes & others go into the water jackets. I run a tap down the threads to make sure the threads are clean & straight then make sure the holes are clean with nothing in them Oil or bits of crud in the blind holes will keep the studs from going all the way down so I use air to blow them out. I like to use a thin coating PermaTex #2 on the stud threads. Make sure none of the Permatex gets on the bottom of the studs as that can hold them up as well.

I just put a new head gasket on my SMTA & found several studs with threads showing. It had been getting water in the oil. Head gasket was good & machine shop found no cracks in the head. After removing the studs & doing as described above I was able to seat the studs all the way down.

I have heard others say it doesn't matter on the threads but the above procedure was recomended to me by a couple older IH mechanics.

Use permatex #2, or similar to seal the threads. There are 4 longer studs that have specific locations. I would assume you know this already.... Try to get a full "nut"s" worth of threads (or close to it) at the top. If you run out of thread, back the stud out a turn or so. It'll seal. Shawn
