400 head gasket question

I openned my full gasket set i got from this site. The head gasket is not the metal with copper crush rings on the water ports. It's a victor with metal on bottom and gasket material on top. The bottom has some kind of protector sprayed on it. On the top right near where is says UP, it also says sealant / retorque required. Question : Do I have to go buy that sealing shellac stuff for this style gasket ? See nothing in manual and no directions with set. ....thanks Tim

Tim, I have alway used copper coat spray on head gasket, since it came out years ago. I Don't like the way the new head gaskets look either, but I have a fue in with no problems. oldiron29

Are you saying you used copper spray on the new style too or not ? ...Tim

they will say that it is ready to use like that but i always used permatex high-tac spray on all my gskts. give it a couple minutes once sprayed on and it gets tacky and holds the gskt in place. it does not harden either.

I just did one on a SM. It was a victor set too. Used Permatex copper coat...Shawn

Coated both sides on my MD with Permatex Copper.
