F-20 crankshaft

I'm restoring a F-20 and I have the engine completely apart, exept for the crank is still in the block. I cant figure out how to take it out. The bolts that hold the bearings in are taken out, and I have the crankshaft gear off. I've been hitting the front of the crank, but nothing is moving. Do I need to hit it with more force, or am I missing a step?

You said you have the bearing cap bolts out, but did you take the bearing caps off? They could be rusted to the block. Does the crank turn? If not, the bearing(s) could be seized to the crank. Or they could have spun. Not much else that could hold the crank in. You definitely should not need a hammer to take it out, especially since you said everything else is off.

An F20 uses ball bearings on the crank Bill. They come out with the crank and then need to be pressed off. No, an F20 crank won't fall out on it's own.

Aha, showing my ignorance. I never took an 'M' apart so I should not have spoken. My shoe has a nasty taste. I should know better than that. My bad. But what is the answer to his question?

Me thinks a bigger hammer. I use an 8 pound sledge. My friend says he uses a 16 lb sledge but I don't have one that heavy and don't know if I could swing it if I did.

to do it correctly, you need to pull the crank out the back of the block. yes, this takes a big specialty puller specific for tha job. Hitting it with a sledge is a dumb idea. it would be like watching a jewler work on your wifse wedding ring with a screwdriver and a mallet

if your bearings roll smooth, and you dont need any crank work done, LEAVE IT IN THERE!! its a fairly big chore to get it out then back in

My two F20's have both had crankshafts removed, and new main bearings installed. IMHO, the only way to do this is to remove the block from the frame rails and have the crankshaft pressed out. That way you're not damaging anything, and if you do replace the mains, everything will be in proper depth and alignment. I would try to find bearings with 11 balls in them. There are new ones out there, but they only have 7 balls.
