Can I start my H with the driveshaft coupler disconnected??

Hey guys, getting my H back together from a complete transmission build and restoration. I haven't got the driveshaft coupler back on yet because I need new tapered bolts, so that's the only thing I'm waiting on. The shaft that connects to it is just pushed foward. Can I try starting it with the clutch pushed in even though that shaft isn't hooked to anything, or would this cause a problem? I'm just antsy to try firing it up since it's a fresh rebuild. Thanks!

That is not a good idea. If you must start the engine, you should completely remove that driveshaft first. Also, do NOT depress the clutch pedal. Doing so will allow the clutch disc to become mis-aligned with crankshaft pilot bearing, and you will never get the driveshaft back in there

I was always worried to remove that shaft because I thought I may not be able to get it to line back up. I guess I'll just do "the right thing" and wait until it's 100% back together, even though we all know how tedious waiting for that can be.

At what point do you "need" new bolts? I have taken apart three of these couplings and all the bolts showed some signs of wear. When is it a necessity? I ask because CNH had the set at $125 or something like that.

I had them laying on my bench at work and somebody "used" three of them, and put the wrong nuts on them (they used coarse thread with them being fine thread or vice versa) and stripped them all to hell. No one seems to know who used them or how it happened though..interesting.

IIRC fine, but that sucks!
