Cub value and what to look for...

There is a 1947 Cub with belly mower about 45 miles from me for sale, asking price is $1700. Is posted on craigslist, pictures look okay. It looks as if someone notched the side of the hood out for an alternator to be put on. Owner says it runs good. I haven't talked to him, his ad said it runs good. What are some things to look for if I make the ride to look at at. I know to check the oil, water, tires, etc but was wondering if any of you Cub owners know of any problems associated with these tractors. Thanks
 
The cub is only 8.5 HP. Keep that in mind.
It is a 4 cylinder 1 liter engine.
Check compression and make sure that you check transfluid level.
Be sure it starts cold......Super important.
Also be sure it starts hot too.
Check the engine oil for coolant in it, thats bad of course.
Check for abuse like, bent rims, body damage etc.
Run the cub with a load, like the mower running.
Is it restored? or rust colored red.?
 
Check for cracked radiator bolster. It could have been frozen and broken. If it has been repaired good that is okay unless you want a trailer queen.
It it has been frozen check head and block behind the distributor or mag area for crack.
Check form excess noise in rear end/ transmission area.
Check for broken engine ears.

I think price is high.
 
If the owner would allow it, a compression test would be a wise thing. I have heard that these cubs cannot be overbored and sleeved when the cylinger walls go bad. About the most you can do is overbore what you can, and put in larger rings.
