Model 340 Tachometer

Hello!

I have a 1958 International Harvester Model 340 Utiity. When it was in the shop over the winter to repair the hydraulics, I had the shop repair the tachometer, which has never worked since I purchased the tractor. I know the tach is working because the "hour meter" IS moving. However, the tach needle bobbles extemsively as if it was indicating more the vibrations of the tractor. As it is running now, I can only "ball park" the rpms of the tractor (in a 400 rpm range). I can only presume this is not the way the tachometer is supposed to work.

Is there anyone out here that has an IHC that can tell me whether they can get a relatively precise RPM reading for their tractor? I am inclined to believe I need to replace the tachometer. Currently, my tachometer is reminiscent of a cheap compass caught between multiple magnetic fields.

Thanks for any and all advice!

The tachometer needle should be every bit as steady as the speedometer in your car. Did the shop repair the tach? Or did they just replace the tach cable? If they replaced the cable, did they get it installed correctly?

I have to presume they replaced the cable. SAdly, the tach needle is far from steady. Without incurring greater expense, would it be woser for me to rebuild the tach (if possible) or replacing it. I wish to avoid shop charges, if at all possible, since I am on pension and disability. I like to do what I can so I can say I am still productive!

You would need to send that tach to someone to be rebuilt, or buy a new tach if one for the 340 utility is available, but before doing that, pull the core out of that new cable and then grease it up good as you slide it back into the housing. Make sure both ends of the core engage securely into the female drive sockets.

I have cured several erratic reading speedometers by simply lubing the cable.

I've got a 300 utility and I put a new tach and cable in. Like they said it runs as smooth as the speedometer in your car.
