M Differential Shaft Seal

I pulled the brake cover off my 48 farmall M tonight to find an oil leak. It appears that the seal around the brake drum needs replaced. Are these difficult to replace? Can I just pull out the old one and press in a new one? Any advise would be appreciated. I looked on the case ih website and I believe I need 1A? They also list 3 different #s for 1A so hopefully the parts guy can help.
Thanks!
Cory

you'll need a bearing/seal puller to remove the old seal. best bet is to take the old one in to NAPA or an autoparts place to see if they can get what you need, it'll be cheaper that way. You might as well do both sides while your at it.

Looks like the original seal, a puller may or may not work with those. Ive put good shheetmetal screws on each side and ptied them out with a pry bar. Ive heard others who cut them out. That type of seal isnt avaiable any longer, some use 2 seals in its place.

It is sort of that easy. That is the concept, but the old seal is HUGE and really durable. Yes, you pry the old one out and push the new one in. Nothing more complicated than that. Just getting the old one out can be tough.

I have heard good reviews on the screw trick. I think a slide hammer with the seal puller would be quite effective.

The old one can be a bear to get out, but it will come - you have to worry it to death.

I have used seals from NAPA (number NOS 28687 I think) which have worked well. The counter guy should be able to cross the IH number (bring all three numbers). You will find the new seal will be thinner than the old original seal. This can be advantageous because you can (and should) position the seal on an area on the shaft that has not been worn by the previous seal.

Some folks use one seal here, others two. Personally I think one is good. Just have the shaft and housing nice and clean, and lubricate the seal with a little gear oil when sliding the shaft through.

Hope that helps

(quoted from post at 08:30:03 04/14/11) do not try to remove #2 from the outside, it comes apart from the inside.

Good call

I just had one of my workers down in Yorkville the other day. Looks like we will start going down there quite a bit in the future.
