Q for Jim Nicholson gear puller??

Jim, I am getting the pile of tools that I will need to work on the steering of my 300 this weekend. You told me about the 175 ft-lbs of torque on the bolster shaft gear, at the top. IF everything else goes as planned, would I benefit by having a gear puller with to get that full circle gear off, or will it come off with some "taps"??? Thanks for any help!

I don't think there is any way to use a gear puller. I jacked mine up about 6" and, with nut loosened but still on, beat on the top of the spindle, with a piece of bar stock between the hammer and nut, till the whole assembly, tires, wheels, shaft and all, dropped out from under the gear. This also make it super easy to unbolt the wheel assembly from the shaft if your going to replace the bolster bushings.

Dean, Thanks for the information. My tractor is 45 miles away, and bringing a big hammer & a couple of jacks is MUCH easier than driving back for them..... or anything else that I SHOULD have thought of before.

you can use a 2 jaw puller and grab the outer housing at the flare out, put some tension on the puller and whack it with a hammer. or get a steel bar, drill the center, weld a nut on to make a puller , then bolt it to the holes that the top cover bolts down to.

As glrnster indicates big (10 inch spread 3/4" screw puller is great. Also heating the gear with a propane or Mapp gas torch will also assist in the removal by expanding the metal off of the shaft. Neither will get the gear hot enough to ruin it. Jim
