Thread Sealant for Gas Tank Plug

I have a plug under the tank on my 400 that appears to be leaking a small amount of gas from it. Is there a good thread sealant that I can put on the plug threads that won't harden up and will be resistant to gas? I'd like to stay away from Teflon tape or dope.

I thought there may have been a post on this earlier, but I couldn't find it. My apologies if this has already been covered.

Thanks.

besides using telon tape, which i have no problem with, i have used loctite 567 thread sealant. i have heard guys say it will still leak with tape but i have not run into that yet.other guys say the tape gets into the gas. well thats not true if its put on correctly on the male threads and then screwed into the female.the tape is worked up not down into the line.

Supposedly there is a teflon tape made just for gasoline and fuel fittings but I have never used it. I just use the commonly available teflon tape that I can get at any home improvement or plumbing supply store. It has always worked and has never caused any problems.

I've always had good luck with teflon tape on threaded gas line fittings. Apply tightly to the male threads, leaving one or two threads bare at the front (narrow) end of the threads so as not get tape debris into the fuel.

Black Permatex pipe dope works also. But I find it kinda messy compared to teflon tape.

rustyfarmall is correct. There is a fuel/gas specific teflon tape. I use it and it works great. It's avaialbe from the plumbing supply house and I bought my last roll from NAPA.

(quoted from post at 10:59:33 04/13/11) Is that the yellow tape? I thought that was natural gas specific, and not for gasoline?

That's what I thought as well. I know we had to use special stuff for all the anhydrous ammonia fittings as well bc regular pipe dope wasn't approved.

I use tape. Don't be a moron and you won't have a problem. Put it on with the threads and not quite to the end. This will stop any tape from going in the tank.

Rectorseal 5 will work well. It is a Teflon emulsion sealer and I guess fits the category of "dope". However, It you just put it on the threads and leave a couple dry, it will work great. Better than teflon tape. Rectorseal 5 is available at any hardware store in the plumbing department. I've used it for years rather than using teflon tape and never have had a problem with it.

When you remove the trap assy look at the threads for corrosion, by design the stub on top of the threads is supposed to let the water settle in bottom, problem was it corroded the diecast pot metal at the threads, new traps were not that expensive when I quit selling parts in 2007, ask for 370832R91 at dealer for $, we used a lot of them because almost all were overtightened & warp the housing around the bail or wire under the bowl. This is for gas engine.

If this is pipe type plug and not sediment bowl a new brass plug with teflon type tape will not leak if threads are good in tank. If threads are bad in tank I would clean everything up good and put JB weld around plug.

Get some Gasoila "soft set" from your local plumbing supply store. I also use some teflon tape and stay above the starting threads. Then use a light coat of the soft set. I use it on natural gas pipes too. Hal
