looking at 400 gas/starting diesel. front loader, pto pump for loader. hooked up jumperbox, engines spins, no fuel or gas in it. since no diesel, does it need to be primed after filling? or will the gas starting side spin fast enough to prim diesel when lever is thrown? [had a wd-4 that had lever from gas to diesel], 400 only have lever on diesel side, how much different are these model for starting. p/s owner wanting 1,500, didnt sell at auction sat. might offer less telling them engine needs work cause won't start [little fib]and take chance. thanks bob

You most certainly need to bleed the lines, at least up to the injection pump.

Whether the injection pump will prime itself after you throw the diesel lever, is up to the pump. Never having experienced and out-of-fuel gas-start diesel before, I would expect that it may require throwing the lever back and forth a few times to get it primed.

Maybe the injection pump will prime itself while idling on gas...

BTW, you sure that was a WD-4? AFAIK, there is no such animal. WD-6, maybe?

yes it needs to be primed. first make sure the fuel level in the tank is above the fuel filters. then open petcock on water trap and bleed.then open bleeder on aux.filter, one closest to tank and bleed. then start on gas and bleed final filter . then bleed injectors. then can switch to diesel and go.
no such animal as wd4 from factory.
and yes it has a decompression lever for the gas side. all gas start diesels use the same procedure for starting.

When running on gas give it some throttle, since the carb is fixed this wil only give it diesel. Then when it starts smoking you know you have diesel at the injectors. But I still would prime the system using the bleeders first.

There's a good chance it wouldn't be a fib about the engine needing work. Most times when you buy one of those that you can't run and check out, you need to buy it at a cost expecting engine work needed. You can put 3 times the cost of the tractor in the engine sometimes. Depending on loader, tires and other things it could be worth 1500 even with a bad engine.
Switching lever is pulled back to start on gas and forward for diesel.
Good idea to check oil level in injection pump and for pump oil dilution along with other fluids before starting.

not sure of model, had for short time, crazy story, was a gas/diesel, maybe wd-6, wasn't as big/tall as 400 looking at.
