I just bought an International 806 this weekend along with a John Deere 1518 cutter. I used it to mow about 15 acres and everything was working fine. I went out this evening to do some more mowing and when I engaged the PTO, I immediately busted the shear pin on the mower. The man who sold me the tractor told me to always slowly engage the PTO with the engine RPM at a low speed. (I guess I didn't have the engine running slow enough when I went to engage the PTO lever.) Well, as soon as I did this I began hearing a loud knocking noise which sounded like metal striking the inside of the case located beneath my feet. Anyone have any ideas what this is or how much damage I may have done?
 
I would guess you will have to pull the pto rear unit out to investigate. Can't say I have seen one do as you say for making noise inside rear case. Far as engaging the pto, there is a partial engagement stage on all those models. This is to get the machine rolling before you fully engage the pto. You should be easily able to feel this when pulling pto lever as it contacts a quite heavy spring well before linkage goes over center to full engage position. That pressure is also adjustable and should be checked when ever pto pressure is set. It is a seperate and more invasive adjustment than the max pressure adjustment. Even running full rpm you should be able to engage pto slowly if you do so carefully.
 
Did noise stop when pto was disengaged? replace shear pin and see if noise goes away. If noise is constant or comes back when pto is engaged, you broke something important inside. 800 rpm max for engagement, and move lever slowly!
Do your hydraulics and steering still work properly?

Knocking is more than likely coming from the no-load slack in the drive train.

Replace the shear pin on the mower and it will probably be just fine. I'd use a hardened pin too.

Even quicker test would be to simply disconnect the PTO shaft from the mower and try the tractor "bareback." If it's still knocking you broke something inside.

Next time, don't just yank the PTO lever to engage it. "Feather" it in gently and slowly. Let the clutches slip a little at the beginning. It won't hurt anything.

After a few times, you'll get a feel for it and the feathering process will go much quicker.
