Dean, you had posted this picture of your Hitachi installation on your Farmall 300. Thanks very much for sharing the picture and other installation advice, I have mine all connected and charging.

Question, is that small metalic cylinder with 1 wire an alternator capacitor? My hitachi didn"t come with one, did yours or did you add it on?
Thanks
Don

It is a radio static supressor. It eliminates alternator whine from your quality audio enjoyment. Ignore, or find one on a car at a wrecking yard. Jim

I'll ignore for now, if after new tires and a paint job I decide to mount a couple hi-range tweeters along the frame rail and a couple thumbing bass speakers on each fender I'll add the capacitor.
Thanks
D

It's probably more important for keeping the peace with the wife or neighbors. If you'll be operating the tractor out of range of AM receivers you'll be okay, otherwise it's a small price to pay to keep folks happy.

(quoted from post at 13:15:34 04/13/11) It came with the alternator. janicholson is correct it's supposed to stop radio interference.

I have a Hitachi (same model) on my 140. It did not come with one--maybe a recent addition? Mine is maybe six years old (from NAPA).

Yeah, I bought the same alternator in December without the capacitor. Of course I think the alternator was used or a handful of years on a compact foreign pickup, maybe some years had it, maybe some years didn"t.

My understanding is that the capacitor reduces alternator whine on a radio directly wired into the vehicle, but not a device that would eliminate radio interferance that is created by the older style unshielded spark plug wires.
