Straight weight or multi viscosity

Getting ready to refill MD tranny after repair. Going to use new gear oil. I'm able to get straight 140, but am wondering if 85/140 will be OK to use. I'm thinking these old machines are not going to get hot enough to raise the viscosity level. Any comments/advice appreciated.

i run what ever is on sale for the rear end lube. 85/140, 80/90, straight weight, i dont think these old tractors really care, as long as they get new oil!!

I don't think Hy-Tran is appropriate for any of the letter series Farmalls. It's too thin and will not provide the protection and lubricity required.

Straight 80, 80-90, or even 85w-140 will be just fine.

What's your thought on running it in a SMTA tractor? Or would you nut run it in anything older than a 400? 450? 560? Newer?

Hy-tran is needed if you have a TA; gear lube will work just fine on straight transmissions. Hy-tran will work fine also; the gear noise will just be a bit louder.

Agreed.

But given the cost I wouldn't pay the extra dollars to put hytran in a non-TA transmission. That and Hytran might be more prone to leak on the oldest of those tractors too.

use the 140#. everything in that old rearend is sixty or so years old and a little sloppy. i use the 140# in the m tractors and as a plus they will leak less.

Go with the 85/140/ Less leaks and better lubrication. You might think about mixing some Lucas Transmission Fix in with it. Quiets those shifts down 100%.

(quoted from post at 17:54:01 04/11/11) Sflem hytran only in SMTA and newer, NOT in H, M, or SM they need gear lube.

Aren't the bull gears and all the other stuff the same exact thing? Why is it ok in a SMTA and not a SM?

Tractors with TAs need to use Hytran rather than gear lube because gear lube is not compatible the TA ramp and rollers. The higher viscosity of the gear lube can cause the rollers to not engage properly and allow the TA to slip when operating in the low side position.
