Is 85w140 too thick for my trans!?

The trans on my Super C makes some noise in 3rd and 4th gears. It didn't do it when I first got it a few months ago, but now I can hear a bit of noise in them. I want to flush all the fluids (already did a oil change and tune up, trans and hydraulics next) so I was wondering if I should stick with 80w90 like I use in my other Farmalls, or go with 85w140. I know it leaks a little, but I figure with the 60 some years of wear on the trans maybe a thicker oil would be better? What do you guys think?

Thanks!

It is thinner when cold (a little) and as thick as 140 when hot. Go for it. By the way they are straight cut spur and bevel gears in the trans, and final drives, they will make noise, that is the nature of the tooth action. Jim

I think you'll be okay, especially if you cruise around a little before doing any serious work. A lot of these old tractors leaked so the old timers would put grease (straight out of the grease gun) into them so they'd seal up.
My great uncles did that on my '52 Super M who knows how long ago. It was with some trepidation that I let the grease drain out (or fall out...) and refilled with 85w140. No leaks now that I can see.

Someone told me to stay with the 90w due to the roller bearings needing that weight to get adequate lubrication.anyone ever heard of this??
