I'm working on a 450 and when the TA is engaged it will work for a while then start to slip and whine. Is is done? I took the top cover off and am a little confused now. When I pull the lever back to engage the TA the TA clutch is loose, but when the lever is forward the clutch is tight, is this correct? What can I look for while the cover is off. Thanks in advance.

Thats correct for clutch, Yes I would say the T/A needs to come out for repairs. You can't see the bad parts in the clutch hole. Center housing needs removed.

What typically goes wrong with these? Do they sell complete rebuilt ones or kits to rebuild your own?

Both are available. Hicapacity is one brand, and there are others. Stay clear of a brand called Mechanical Diode. A contributor here named Kevin Meier sells all the parts and whole rebuilt units.
The component in yours that is failing is called a one way clutch. It is a device that looks like a roller bearing. It is at the rearward end of the TA near the transmission. It prevents the TA housing from turning backwards, but allows it to turn forward. This is the sole component that is currently slipping when it should hold. If you are a mechanic and tool friendly, with the ability to safely split the tractor you can do it.
If not, it is a job for others. Jim

Thanks for the info. I am fairly tool handy and am willing to try this once I find a way to split and hold both halves safely. I'm sure there will be more questions to come as I get into it!
