My farmall C was not charging. Did my trouble shooting and found bad VR. Installed new VR, started and ran tractor charging now. strang thing is when I shut down amp gauge needle goes all the way over to discharge full. Like there is a short. Switch on or off same thing. If I crank the starter some the needle comes back to middle 0 or if I remove battery cable it goes back to middle 0. Where should I look gen. or wiring? any help would be appreciated. oldiron29

It is not a good new regulator. The cutout relay is sticking closed making it discharge backward through the gen. It could be adjusted, but is a new part. Get a new one. Hitting the starter causes it to find enough difference in voltage to snap out of contact. My opinion is bad new VR. Jim

Did you get a reg for pos ground and did you get the one listed for your generator and did you polarize the gen when you hooked it back up there are lots of things taht can go wrong when replacing a reg if the correct steps arent folllowed. Did you follow the instructions with the new one.

Gene, Yes it is 6 volt and pos ground. It is the same as the old one, I did not change any wiring.
Only think I did not understand was it came with a reister to mount on the field post? I tried it with and with out no difference. I polorized the first time i put it on. but than I disconected the battery to get the amp gauge back to 0. As Jim said I could fiddel with it but it is new.

That reg is made to replace the cut-outs that were used before around 1949 when the tractor had a 4 position sw for hi- charge. Now with the new regulator you dont use the wire that went from the field back to the lite sw for hi-charge. It should have worked good. The manufacturer of these regs had a very good article in Red Power explaining their use and the ones i have bought worked well. By the way do you know the Delco Remy # on the tag.
