Belt pully shaft leaks

This has been asked before, but I don't remember the answer. On the Super A and others with the same belt pulley, the shaft seal rides on a spacer. The shaft turns inside the spacer and oil leaks between the spacer and the shaft. Is there a fix for that? The only use for the SA is a Woods belly mower, might not be a problem if the belt pulley/PTO is not used. The parts book also lists a "spacer, belt pulley". Since mine has a Woods pulley I don't have that one. Do I need it and does it have anything to do with the leak -- don't think it does.

You need the spacer is that correct. That area is notorius for some leak you can slow it down but is hard to stop. I will have to look but i should have one from one i parted out.

I don't think I need the belt pulley spacer because it has a Woods pulley on it, unless you say it will slow the leak. I assume the belt pulley spacer just keeps the pulley the proper distance on the shaft?. The Woods has a tapered sleeve that is tightened on the shaft.

Problem is the shaft turns inside the spacer, I suppose friction could also cause the spacer to turn also. I suppose it could slow the flow when it sets up -- I might try that.

Normally the bolt that holds the pulley on holds the spacer tight too so it has to turn with the shaft . I don't know what kind of set-up you have. After the silicone gets dry the spacer should stay with the shaft & turn indide the seal. Get it clean & dry so it can hold.

The V-belt pulley has a tapered fitting that fits into the pulley and onto the belt pulley shaft and is pulled tight by its own bolts, so I don't need a bolt in the end of the shaft. The tractor does not have the 2nd belt pulley sleeve/spacer. So, the shaft turning inside the sleeve is the problem. I will try what you say and see if I can get them to turn together. If I had the sleeve and used it to make the other spacer turn with the shaft oil can still leak between the sleeve and the shaft. Thanks for the help.

If you chucked the sleeve in a lathe and cut a groove in the inside for an Oring that fit the shaft, it would make it permanent. Jim

You still need the spacer. If you want one i can send it send e-mail. dont know why like other plost said that silicone would nto work for a better seal I havent seen a Woods on all theose type tractors that didnt leak. Our B didnt leak and we used it a lot grinding feed.
