COAL OIL REFRIGERATORS

When I was a child my Aunt had a Refriferator that was somehow powered by Coal Oil. All I remember was she had to fill a fuel tank under the Frig with Coal Oil every so often. I do not remember the sound of an engine running. Does anyone know how these machines cooled using Coal Oil. Was it simply the fuel to run an engine powering a compresser?

They are likely the same as used in RV's, closed system Amonia absorption (NO compressor whatsoever). They require a heat source such as LP gas or 12 VDC or 120 VAC like in campers, but no reason why any fuel (Kerosene, Coal Oil, Diesel Fuel etc etc) cant be used as a heat source. Ive seen such fridges in the Amish Community where utility electricity is verboten. Theres really no moving parts and as long as theres no system leaks and the chimney etc is kept clean of carbon and soot deposits and they are proprely vented thay can last like forever lol

If Im wrong as to the type of fridge maybe the other gents can correct me

That sounds correct since I believe I would remember the sound of an engine if there was one. I remember getting this contraption was a big deal. It was rare that they spent money on anything for the house and for them this would have been a major purchase. Thanks

I think these were made by Servel and they ran on natural gas, propane, electric elements inserted into the unit and oil.No moving parts so no noise.Odors if the burner got plugged with dust.

John T is on the right track. It's an ammonia absorbtion (R717) system...as he stated it does need a heat source though...and coal oil will do the trick.

I was just a kid, but I can remember an uncle firing up his Servel refrigerator in the 1930's. It had two or three round metal canisters that held kerosene (coal oil), each with a wick that he lit with a match.

The canisters looked something like those used by truckers as road warning flares back in that time.

Do an online search for 'gas refrigerator.' Lot of ads and "Howstuffworks" will explain how they operate.

My grandmother had kerosene refrigerator and back in fortys she spilled herosene when fueling it and burned house down to ground 100%.
