Farmall H Generator

I am reconditioning a 1951 Farmall H. The electrical system is the original 6 volt system with a positve ground. The tractor has a voltage regulator attached to the steering column. While the tractor is running, the ammeter shows a slight discharge reading. What voltage reading should I be getting at the generator terminals when the tractor is running? Appreciate your help. Thanks.

If it shows a discharge when running, shes probably NOT genning. Bob already gave ya good voltage readings (If shes genning) and heres my Troubleshooting Procedure which may help figure out why if shes not.

I am not correcting you bob, just making clarification!! Those volts are all positive volts measured with the volt meter across the battery with leads connected black to negative, red to positive.Jim

EVEN MORE And thats right iffffffffff the genny is working,,,,,,,And iffffffff the cutout relay is closed (enabling genny to be coupled up to battery).

As yall know the cutout relay shouldnt close unless and until the gennys output voltage (across its ARM post and frame ground) exceeds battery voltage.

I dont put too much faith on a gennys open unloaded output voltage (ARM to ground) value (for troubleshooting purposes, other then it obviously has to be greater then 6.3 volts or so) as that can drop once the battery becomes in contact. Its to what voltage the genny can raise a battery/load that really matters versus spinning it on a bench with no load applied.

I know yall know this Im just chattin maybe to help others

J, here's the question he asked:

"What voltage reading should I be getting at the GENERATOR TERMINALS when the tractor is running?"

So, I replied "- 7.2 to -7.4 Volts.", a direct answer to his question 'cept I should have added "At the 'A' terminal".
