H-farmall firing on 1 and 4 cyl.

what you mean not firing? no spark from the wires or no "ignition" in the cylinders i had a 230 that missed on two cant rember which two but found that the shaft that turns the rotor button was bent and missing the cap towers

To look at this logically, the main thing that would cause this problem is a lack of spark. This could be traced to bad plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc. I also suppose there could be some internal problem causing this failure. The thing to do would be to pull your plugs, make sure they are not cracked or are discolored bad. Then make sure your plug wires are good. If all of this checks out, get into the distributor and make sure everything is functioning correctly (for example, rotor button, points, etc.). If the tractor is in good condition otherwise, you will most likely find a problem with one of these components.
Good luck, SF

Sounds like a classic example of the plug wires not in correct positions on distributor cap. Check that. If that's not it, do a compression test to see if 2&3 have good compression. If compression is low on those two cylinders, blown head gasket is most probable.

you could also check the bushings in the distributor for wear, grab the rotor and wiggle it side to side. if there is excessive play, that may cause the points to not open on a couple cylinders.

Make sure you have your wires in this firing order on the cap. Make sure the valves aren't opened on those cylinders. Hal

2-1
4-3 As the rotor turns CW.
